Shovel Point, north shore Lake Superior

The view from Palisade Head of Shovel Point along the north shore of Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota reveals colorful shades of greens and blues from the evergreen trees, the horizon and the big lake. Shovel Point is the signature hike in one of the best parks on the North Shore of Lake Superior. You can enjoy towering cliffs, rocky beaches, gnarled cedars, and the power of the lake itself. An easy hour along the North Shore Scenic Byway from Duluth, Tettegouche State Park is a rugged, 10,000 acre park on Lake Superior. Although the interior of the park offers miles of trails to waterfalls and mountain tops, the best way to see the coast is to take the easy hike to Shovel Point. Begin your hike behind the visitor's center following the signs for the Hiking Club trail. The trail heads east along shore with several overlooks along the way. These cliffs are a favorite place for rock climbers and hook ups are built into the rock for your convenience. The trail ends at a point jutting out into the water with great views of the lake and the surrounding terrain.
